[Prairie_Beef] Managing cows on open Prairies

Some of our members have prairies and desire to raise a cow or two, but
don't have the fencing required to do so. Adding the fencing would be
cost prohibitive just for one or two animals. I've been thinking about
this and comparing what I've seen in Russia, so thought I would post.
First: cows are herd animals. I think it would be cruel to only raise one
- get at least 2 or 3 so they each have company.
In Russia, I commonly saw cows with halters and ropes or chains attached.
I have to believe these cows are often staked to an area for a day, then
moved to a new place the next day. The calves would naturally stay by
their Moms, so probably wouldn't need to be staked. Seems to me that this
would work equally well for us. Of course, water would need to be
provided, or at least the cows walked down for a drink from the local pond
twice a day.
Thoughts?
Kevin
